St. Mariana of Quito - Feast 26th May

A Tapestry of Lights and Shadows

The lives of the people of the Colonial period, characters, both good and bad, that have been affected by the appearance of Our Lady of Good Success in Quito, Ecuador have contributed to create an enchanting, and to some, a seemingly phantasmal story. Like the intertwining fibers of a beautiful tapestry, these fibers both bright and dark, create the illusion of lights and shadows upon its medium. These lives are essential in relaying an accurate account of the life and times of Mother Mariana and Our Lady of Good Success. Lacking one or the other, the glorious story and devotion to Our Lady under this eloquent title of Good Success would not exist. This section of the website is dedicated to focusing on one of the many "lights" of this tapestry.

"A Saint Has Canonized Another Saint"

This first light is a subtle light—rather a soft glow which emanates from the picture itself.

In the history that revolves around the miraculous statue of Our Lady of Good Success in Quito, Ecuador, there exists not only the Mariana that is known affectionately as "Mother Mariana", the visionary but a St. Mariana, the Lily of Quito. Both bear the name of Mariana de Jesus. When discovering the distinction between these two "Mariana’s" there is a natural urge to feel a little tinge of disappointment since our heroine of the story of Our Lady of Good Success has not yet been canonized. Instead this "other Mariana" has been chosen to hold this title of honor and sanctity, becoming the first canonized saint of Ecuador. (For the sake of lessening the confusion between the 2 Mariana’s I will title Mother Mariana –"Mother Mariana" and St. Mariana I will title "The Lily of Quito")

Remember, then, that in this intriguing story of Our Lady, Mother Mariana asked Our Lady of Good Success a special favor—to remain unknown and hidden as it were from the local people of that time since she feared they would try to idolize her. Our Lady of Good Success granted her request but promised her that this favor would only be for a time. She stated that in the Twentieth Century Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres would become known as this devotion to Our Lady of Good Success would see resurgence

This page is dedicated then to St. Mariana de Jesus Paredes y Flores-The Lily of Quito. She is a minor character in the story of Our Lady of Good Success but an important one nonetheless. The Lily of Quito is essentially important since she subtly points approvingly and encouragingly to the legitimacy of this devotion to Our Lady of Good Success by the recorded account of her respectful and revering attitude toward Mother Mariana.

The known account of "The Lily of Quito’s" contact with Mother Mariana is a bit unusual in that it occurred at Mother Mariana’s funeral in 1635. It is written in "The Lily of Quito’s" own hand in her diary that she kept. It is now part of the archives of the Carmelite Monastery in Quito which was once her home. These archives rest in the Jesuit Church of "La Compania".

Upon learning of the death of Mother Mariana, The Lily of Quito wished to venerate the remains of the sister that understood the concept of true sanctity. Rightfully, they were kindred spirits at heart. It is said that "The Lily of Quito", upon reaching the Conceptionist Church, found it already packed with faithful souls paying their last respects to Mother Mariana. Despite being only seventeen years of age, "The Lily of Quito" was already known far and wide amongst the people of Quito for her sanctity. At the sight of this holy young woman and out of respect for her reputation of sanctity, a passageway was created so that she could easily make her way through the throng to be as close as possible to the coffin. From this choice spot, she participated in the funeral ceremony. She was able to gaze upon the face of the deceased as she listened to the inspired words of the Bishop of Quito, Mons. Fr. Pedro of Oviedo( also Spiritual Director of the Conceptionist sister). At the end of this inspirational sermon, "The Lily of Quito" could not contain in her heart that which had just been revealed to her about Mother Mariana’s exemplary and virtuous life by way of Divine Inspiration. With deepest sincerity and reverence, she exclaimed, "A saint has died!"

Thus her appearance at the funeral of Mother Mariana de Jesus Torres made a testimony to this good sister’s sanctity.

In the book, "La Mujer y la Monja Extraordinaria- Mariana Francisca De Jesús Torres y Berriochoa", Dr. Luis E. Cadena y Almelda, Postulator for the Cause of Beatification of the Servant of God Mother Mariana Francisca de Jesus Torres y Berriochoa, expresses his thoughts about this eventful happening in this quotation:

"In this way, a saint has canonized another saint."

Truly there is no better way to summarize this significant occurrence! May the Church see fit to someday agree with the proclamation of St Mariana de Jesus Paredes y Flores, The Lily of Quito!

The Prelate to save the Priesthood

"We turn to the Blessed Virgin Mary. You well know, my dear brethren, one must have told you of Leo XIII’s prophetic vision revealing that one day “the See of Peter would become the seat of iniquity.” He said it in one of his exorcisms, called “The Exorcism of Leo XIIL” Has it come about today? Is it tomorrow? I do not know. But in any case it has been foretold. Iniquity may quite simply be error. Error is iniquity: to no longer profess the Faith of all time, the Catholic Faith, is a grave error. If there ever was an iniquity, it is this. And I really believe that there has never been a greater iniquity in the Church than Assisi, which is contrary to the First Commandment of God and the First Article of the Creed. It is incredible that something like that could have ever taken place in the Church, in the eyes of the whole Church – how humiliating! We have never undergone such a humiliation! You will be able to find all of this in Fr. LeRoux’s booklet which has been especially published in order to give you information on the present situation in Rome.

It was not only the good Pope Leo XIII who said these things, but Our Lady prophesied them as well. Just recently, the priest who takes care of the priory of Bogota, Colombia, brought me a book concerning the apparition of Our Lady of “Buon Suceso,” – of “Good Fortune,” to whom a large church in Quito, Ecuador, was dedicated. They were received by a nun shortly after the Council of Trent, so you see, quite a few centuries ago. This apparition is thoroughly recognized by Rome and the ecclesiastical authorities; a magnificent church was built for the Blessed Virgin Mary wherein the faithful of Ecuador venerate with great devotion a picture of Our Lady, whose face was made miraculously. The artist was in the process of painting it when he found the face of the Holy Virgin miraculously formed. And Our Lady prophesied for the twentieth century, saying explicitly that during the nineteenth century and most of the twentieth century, errors would become more and more widespread in Holy Church, placing the Church in a catastrophic situation. Morals would become corrupt and the Faith would disappear. It seems impossible not to see it happening today.

I excuse myself for continuing this account of the apparition but she speaks of a prelate who will absolutely oppose this wave of apostasy and impiety – saving the priesthood by forming good priests. I do not say that prophecy refers to me. You may draw your own conclusions. I was stupefied when reading these lines but I cannot deny them, since they are recorded and deposited in the archives of this apparition."

Message for Our Times - Our Lady of Quito, Part 3

( Part 2 )

It was August 6th 1875 the first Friday of the month the day dedicated to the Sacred Heart, Moreno attended Holy Mass and later visited the chapel where the Blessed Sacrament exposed, he then headed towards the government palace as he approached the entrance the main assassin rushed forward and attacked him with a machete. The three other conspirators pulled out pistols and began shooting, nearby soldiers killed one assassin at the scene and eventually captured the others.

The dying president was taken into the Cathedral and placed at the feet of the shrine of Our Lady of Sorrows to whom he had a great devotion. The priest who administered the last rites asked the President if he forgave his enemies. With effort Garcia Moreno opened his eyes and expressed his forgiveness moments later he died. Medical report relate that he was stuck six times and struck by a machete fourteen times. The President was found to be carrying a Relic of the True Cross, a scapular of the Passion and Sacred Heart, his Rosary and a medal of Pope Pius IX. In his pocket was a copy of the Imitation of Christ, in which the President had written, 'My Saviour Jesus Christ, give me a greater love of thee and profound humility and teach me this day what I should do for thee and thy greater glory and service'

In a public address in Rome on September 20th, 1875 Pope Pius IX had this to say, “In the midst of all this the Republic of Ecuador was miraculously distinguished by the spirit of justice and unshakable faith of its President, who showed himself ever the submissive son of the Church, full of devotion for the Holy See, and of zeal to maintain religion and piety throughout his nation. And now the impious, in their blind fury, look, as an insult upon their pretended modern civilisation, upon the existence of a government, which, while consecrating itself to the materiel well-being of the people, strives at the same time to assure its moral and spiritual progress. Then, in the councils of darkness organised by sects, these villains decreed the murder of the illustrious President. He fell under the steel of an assassin, as a victim to his Faith and Christian charity.. For Pius IX, also, the death of Garcia Moreno is the death of a martyr.”

Less than two years later on Good Friday March 30th 1877, Archbishop Checa was poisoned to death. He courageously resisted the anti catholic demands of the liberal Masonic government that had taken over shortly after Garcia Moreno's assassination, and it was this resistance that caused his death.

We pray to Mother Mariana and to Our Lady of Good Success that we be willing to suffer and offer penance, and keep the faith of Christ in times that are challenging. Our Lady said the souls that would remain faithful in these difficult times would need great strength of will constancy valour and confidence in God. Moments would come when everything would seem to be lost and paralysed that would be the moment she promised of the happy beginning of the complete restoration. Only one prophesy uttered by Our Lady of Good Success has yet to be fulfilled, it is the prophesy in which she states, “My hour will arrive when I, in an amazing manner will overthrow proud Satan crushing him under my feet, chaining him in the infernal abyss, leaving the Church and that land free of this cruel tyranny.”

In the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph.

PART 1

The truly Catholic President mentioned in Our Lady's prophesy was Gabriel Garcia Moreno one of his first acts was to issue a concordat restoring liberty to the church. In 1867 he established a constitutional government under the Kinship of Christ. In 1870 it was Ecuador alone among all the nations of the world that publicly protested the invasion of the papal states and offered a national subsidy for the captive pope. In 1873 together with José Ignacio Checa y Barba the Archbishop of Quito he formally consecrated Ecuador to the Sacred Heart of Jesus part of which read, “prostrate before your divine presence all the public powers of the church and of the state offer and consecrate to Thee now and for ever the Republic of Ecuador as thy exclusive possession and property.”

The enraged socialist and Freemasons who lost their offices when Garcia Moreno took over the presidency made calumny campaigns against him. But nothing succeeded at turning the people against one so honest and good. Under him Catholic schools and universities prospered. The national debt was dissolved highways and infrastructure were built, criminals were placed behind bars or hanged, and the streets were safe. The more the people loved him the greater the hatred of the Masons. Soon after his election to a third term and with a great impulse of fervour he shouldered a huge wooden cross during a Holy Week procession and lead the procession through the streets of Quito. Shortly thereafter the Freemasons arranged for his assassination.

Aware of this Garcia Moreno wrote immediately to Pope Pius IX asking for his blessing before the inauguration day of August 30. 'I wish to obtain your blessing before that day so that I may have the strength and light which I need so much in order to be unto the end a faithful son of our Redeemer and a loyal and obedient servant of His Infallible Vicar. Now that the Masonic Lodges of the neighbouring countries instigated by Germany are vomiting against me all sorts of horrible insults and horrible calumnities, now that the Lodges are secretly arranging for my assassination, I have more need than ever of the divine protection so that I may live and die in defence of our holy religion and the beloved republic which I am called once more to rule...What greater privilege still, if your blessing were to obtain for me the grace of shedding my blood for Him, who being God desired to shed His on the Cross for me? May I be deemed worthy to shed my blood for the cause of the Church and Catholic Society.”

Our Lady of Good Success and Archbishop Lefebvre!

This is taken from June 1988. Consecrations of 4 Bishops.

Morals would become corrupt and the Faith disappear. It seems impossible not to see it today.
I excuse myself for continuing this account of the apparition but she speaks of a prelate who will absolutely
oppose this wave of apostasy and impiety - saving the priesthood by forming good priests. You can make the
application if you like, I do not wish to make it myself (Applause). I was stupefied when reading these lines but I cannot deny them, since they are recorded and filed in the archives of this apparition."
